Improving Access and Rights over Land for the Rural Poor

Land is a fundamental asset and a primary source of livelihood to the rural families across the country which comprises a substantial majority of the population. But, about 15 million people in our country own no land and another estimated 28 million rural families who “own” land hold it insecurely because they lack one of the three essential ingredients of legally secure land rights: possession of land; title document; and entry in the land records. Landlessness or having insecure land right is devastating for the rural people. This is more so for the poor and tribal who are doubly vulnerable. Lack of legal awareness, absence of legal aid, inaccessible adjudicating systems and weak enforcement are few factors disabling the poor and tribal to secure access and rights over land. MORE..
